About Gender Oral History Archive

The Arab Oral History Archive: Gender, Alternative Histories, and the Production of Knowledge, also known as the Gender Oral History Archive (GOHA) is a multi-year project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This project aims to create new collections of oral histories and to tap into oral history methodologies and archives in order to create a more inclusive and critical body of new situated knowledge, and subaltern archival repositories about the region.

The project has placed feminist practices of oral history at its core, and has culminated in the creation of an archive, housed at the American University of Beirut University Libraries, centered on the oral histories of the Dar al Fata al Arabi Publishing House and on interviewing women of the 70s generation about their experiences. These two collections constitute a platform for new powerful, situated critiques of power structures, especially those related to gender.
